Child Safety with Lahood Products and Processes
Cords and chains on blinds and curtains can be a real hazard for young children. Here's the risk, what we're doing about it, and how to choose with confidence.
Why Child Safety Matters
Little ones are naturally curious, and the cords and chains on blinds and curtains can be within easy reach and pose a risk when within reach.
Sadly, eight young children in New Zealand have lost their lives since 2008 after becoming entangled in window covering cords. In response, the Government has announced new upcoming safety standards for corded window coverings, bringing New Zealand into line with Australia, Canada, the European Union and the United States.
At Lahood, this care is already part of what we do. Child safety is a part of how we design, supply and install every corded or chained window covering, so you can enjoy your home with peace of mind.
What we are doing about it
Every corded or chained window covering we supply now comes with an optional safety option. Our consultants explain it at your in-home consultation, and your choice is recorded and carried through to installation.
Tensioners and wall boxes for corded or chained blinds
Every corded or chained blind we supply comes with a child safety device that secures the cord or chain to the wall or substrate.
We'll talk you through it at your consultation, and your installer will fit it, or leave it with you, depending on what you decide.
Breakaway clips for Roman blinds
We can fit your Roman blinds with quick-release breakaway clips on the lifting cords at the back. If a child becomes tangled, the clip releases instantly, then simply reconnects.
Our consultants show you how they work at your consultation. There's no extra charge, and it's always your choice.
How it works
The choice to use child safety devices is always yours. Here's how we help you decide.
1. We talk it through
Your consultant shows you the safety device, explains how it works, and also assess risk of furniture placement in relation to window covering to help reduce risk.
2. You Decide
Your decision is recorded on your proposal, so it's documented clearly and carried through to manufacturing and your installation day.
3. We install the safety device, or leave it with you
If you opted for Breakaway Clips on roman blinds, the product comes ready to go.
If you'd chose to have a tensioner or chain box fitted, our installer does it on the day. If not, we leave it with you, should you decide to install it yourself at a later stage.
Prefer no cords or chains at all?
For increased peace of mind, we offer a range of motorised and naturally cord-free window coverings. Where possible, we recommend these as the safest option of all.

Luxaflex® Shutters
The entire range of Luxaflex® Shutters are cord-free and designed with safety in mind for both young children and pets. They are compliant to the latest ACCC Child Safety Regulations to ensure they are safe for the occupants and visitors to the home.
Luxaflex Duettes®, with Ultraglide® & LiteRise®
Both operate without a cord. Raise and lower with a smooth wand or a simple push-pull on the bottom rail.
Luxaflex Lumishades®
Our vertical Lumishades have no connecting chains or weights along the bottom.
Already have corded /chained blinds or curtains at home?
If your existing blinds or curtains have loose cords, you can fit a simple tensioner to the wall to hold them securely out of reach. These are inexpensive and available from most hardware and DIY stores
